Task: What Will You Be Doing?
Part 1:
In this project, you will work within a group to discover Spanish-speaking countries "home-remedies." You will start by picking a country and a virus to research. Before this can happen, you will need to complete the warm-up game that is on Quizlet. This is an individual exercise that will get you geared up to begin working on your projects. This activity should take you approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Part 2:
In the next phase of this project, as a class, we will discuss medical terms used to diagnose certain viruses, starting with the flu symptoms. After a quick brainstorming session about the conditions and medications that are used for treating the flu, you will then write new vocabulary in your notebooks from two Youtube videos that provide more medical terminology in Spanish: Medical terms in Spanish to survive. This exercise will introduce you to some of the vocabulary that you will discover in your research on the different Spanish-speaking countries. This activity should take no more than 20 minutes.
Part 3:
You will be placed in groups of 3 students each, then, as a group you will read the article about evaluating Internet Research sources . You will do so in pieces, so every student is responsible for mastering one piece of information and then together, you will discuss your findings to ensure that every member in the group knows/ understands how to use the CARS checklist when determining information quality in a website. Then, each group will search reliable websites to verify what people take for common viruses (common cold, flu, 24 hrs. stomach bug, strep throat, etc.). Within your groups you will create a Popplet about your findings in Spanish (terms, medication, length of the condition, etc.), no English, and post your product in Edmodo. Popplet is a free of charge website.
Part 4:
After you have completed the above steps, you will continue to work with the same group by creating a VoiceThread with pictures and a recording in Spanish about the diagnosis and remedies for an assigned virus in a Spanish-speaking country of your choice. When you sign up for an account on VoiceThread, make sure to use only the Basic account as this one is free of charge. You can upgrade it later on if you wish to have more capabilities within the site, but it is not required. Each group will have 35-40 minutes to work on it, and to upload their final product to Edmodo.
Depending on the length of the class period, students will have between three to five days to complete the assignment.
